Longwood’s Chrysanthemum Festival is one of the largest and oldest chrysanthemum displays in North America. Chrysanthemums were first grown and displayed in the Gardens when our founder Pierre du Pont opened the Conservatory in 1921. Dr Cheryl Renee Gooch will be on hand to talk about and sign copies of her book, "Hinsonville's Heroes". The free black community of Hinsonville sent its sons to serve the Union when called on. Some of these soldiers survived the bloody battle at Fort Wagner, South Carolina, as memorialized in the film "Glory".
