2018 MLK CommUNITY Breakfast
Monday, January 21 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am
18th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. CommUNITY Breakfast and Day of Sharing
The Martin Luther King CommUNITY of the Greater Kennett Area will present the 18th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. CommUNITY Breakfast on Monday, January 21, 2019. The breakfast is an opportunity to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy of love and service and be inspired to live out his dream today in our community and throughout the world. Our 2019 theme is “Diversity is our Strength.”
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Brenda A. Allen, President of Lincoln University. A noted psychologist and first alumna to lead the university, she has been embraced by the community. She has also been deeply engaged with faculty, staff, students, alumni and community partners to build upon the institution’s positive momentum and reimagine it’s strategic plan for the future. It is her vision that the nation’s first historically Black university provides students both a 21st century liberal arts undergraduate education and innovative graduate and professional programs.
Dr. Allen has previously served as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Winston Salem State University (WSSU), Associate Provost and Director of Institutional Diversity at Brown University and has held numerous academic and administrative positions at Smith College and Yale University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Lincoln University, a master’s degree in experimental psychology from Howard University and a doctorate in developmental psychology from Howard University.
The author or co-author of more than two dozen journal articles, book chapters and other works on cultural influences on cognitive and social development, Dr. Allen will share her thoughts on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and the positive vision she also has of a nation made stronger by embracing diversity and committed to working together for peace, justice and equality for all.
There will be opportunity to dialogue with Dr. Allen after the breakfast at the Kennett Inn and to volunteer in the 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Sharing.
