Events Historic Kennett Square is working on:
- October Art Stroll: Oct. 1

- Farmers market continues to attract new vendors and new customers.
- Kennett Brewfest - Connoisseur tasting has sold out. We continue to sell tickets for the regular fest and line up brewers and vendors.
Economic Development
- The Economic Development Committee continues to meet on the third Wednesday of every month. The committee is looking to create a business environment that encourages and directs investment in downtown.
- Facilitating the opening of Green Eyed Lady at the corner of State and Union Streets. I coordinated the ARB application and attended the monthly ARB meeting with business owners on Aug. 18.
- Working with the county Economic Development Office and Larry Bosley on the Anchor Building Grant Application.
- Continue to meet with Jack McFadden on his plans for 120 E. State St. I am coordinating a meeting with the borough's Architectural Review Board and the Historic Commission to review the renovation plans for Sept. 15.
- Continue to work on filling the vacancies in town.
Promotion/Marketing
- Putting the finishing touches on the updated tourist brochure. The following businesses sponsored the brochure: Bryn Mawr Trust, Chester County Hospital; Genesis HealthCare; Larmore Scarlett LLP and Bove Jewelers.
- Met with the marketing committee to establish a marketing plan for the rest of the year, including the holidays.
- We are creating a "Buy Local" marketing campaign for the fall and holidays. The campaign will educate the public on the benefits of supporting local businesses.
- We continue to maintain a presence on Facebook (over 1,000 fans) and MySpace.

Kennett Flash
- Elvis was a sold out show at the Flash last week and was part of a successful weekend.
- Continue to work with Clarke Green on the annual giving campaign Cash for the Flash.
Organization
- I attended a recent Kennett Area Community Development (gateway project) meeting. The fundraiser working with the group will be working out of our office/conference room.
- Coordinating with the Pennsylvania Downtown Center on HKS reaching "Achiever" status. An assessment of our program will be conducted in September. It is necessary for us to be an "Achiever" to receive project dollars from the state.
Events
- Working on Murder Mystery Art Stroll for Aug. 6. This event usually attracts several hundred people.
- Last month's Art Stroll was very well attended. HKS paid for live music in front of Café Lindo and at the corner of State and Union Streets.
- Farmers market continues to attract new vendors and new customers. Whitney is working on the craft portion of the market, which is held on the first Friday of every month to coincide with the Art Stroll.
- Kennett Brewfest - Have the liquor license; event application approved; updating website; inviting brewers and selling tickets.
Economic Development
- The Economic Development Committee met on July 21. The committee is looking to bring in a guest speaker to talk about achieving a good merchant mix in a downtown area.
- Working with the county Economic Development Office and Larry Bosley on the Anchor Building Grant Application.
- Continue to work on filling the vacancies in town.
Promotion/Marketing
- Putting the finishing touches on the updated tourist brochure. A photographer was in town on July 22 and 23 to take some new image shots of the downtown.
- Handed out about 800 reusable shopping bags that promote the downtown's independent retailers and about 1,500 Kennett Flash fans at the XPN music festival last weekend. The bags were a big hit and Lisa Baldwin from Chantilly Blue bought 100 to hand out to her customers.
- We continue to maintain a presence on Facebook (over 1,000 fans) and MySpace.

- A Buy Fresh Buy Local Festival is planned for July 16 at the Market and will include a show that night at the Flash.
- Working on marketing the July Art Stroll, which was moved to the second Friday because of the
July 4 holiday.
- Kennett Brewfest - Borough Council approved the Kennett Brewfest event application on June
21 and we are in the process of selling tickets.
Economic Development
- Frolic! plans to open July 1.
- Working with Sen. Pileggi's office to help release the funds from the Downtown Reinvestment Grant for Jack McFadden's building.
- In the process of applying for the Anchor Building Grant for the 148 building.
- We are working to fill vacancies in the downtown I showed the prto a potter and he is negotiating a lease with the property owner.
Promotion/Marketing
- In the process of creating an updated tourist brochure.
- Working with Kedash Design and Torelli's Mens Shop to create marketing hand-outs for the booth at the XPN music festival on July 16, 17 & 18. Some of the items include a cotton reusable shopping bag, a Kennett Flash fan and a post card encouraging people to visit Kennett Square for shopping and dining.
- Working on the Murder Mystery Art Stroll on Aug. 6 - the Mystery of the Blue Demons
Reunion.
- An Events Committee meeting was held on June 11 - events we discussed include the
Halloween Parade, holiday events and Art Strolls.

- Attendance has been very slow - working with Point Entertainment on ways to increase attendance.

- Whitney and I attended the PA Downtown Conference in Lancaster from June 13-16. The theme was "The Future of the Past: New Economic Realities for Traditional Revitalization."

- Farmers market opened last week and was a great success. Lots of vendors and visitors. Whitney is working on a craft portion of the market, which will open in June or July.
- The May Art Stroll was very well attended. The June Art Stroll is a Beach Party theme and we are working with KARMA on promotion.
- Working on the Memorial Day Parade - confirming all sponsorship dollars are in prior to the parade.
- Beers on Broad Street - working hard to get the word out and sell tickets. Marketing is in high gear.

- HGTV finished filming the local House Hunters show on Saturday, May 8. The couple they featured bought a home in Somerset Lake in Landenberg.
- Kennett Farmers Market and Art Stroll rack cards have been printed and will be distributed to local businesses and around the region in visitor and tourism destination spots.
- Art Stroll posters for the summer have been printed and distributed.
- Worked with a reporter from the New York Daily News on an article on Kennett Square has a food lovers' paradise.
- Whitney, JoAnn and I are meeting with Leslie Kedash and Barb McCoy about moving forward with a marketing plan, including updating the tourist brochure. The first Marketing Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 9 at 8:30 a.m. We have invited merchants and community members to attend.

- Meeting regularly with borough staff coordinating flower plantings in the downtown we are extending the hanging baskets on State Street to Willow Street.
- Whitney and I will be attending the PA Downtown Conference in Lancaster from June 13-16. I will be a panelist for one of the education sessions.
Economic Development
- Borough council approved the agreement with the Chester County Economic Development council for administering the Downtown Reinvestment Grant and the Anchor Building Grant if it is awarded to KSB for 148 W. State St.
- Continue to work with the CCEDC on applying for the Anchor Building Grant.
- We are working to fill four vacancies in the downtown - 117 W. State St., 110 E. State St, 102 E. State St. and 100 E. State St.
Promotion
- Working on the Memorial Day Parade. So far we have raised $9,900 from RJ Waters, Taylor Oil, Genesis, Longwood Rotary, Mushroom Festival, Fenstermacher & Co., Larmore Scarlett, Perna & Abracht and Grieco Family Funeral Homes.
- Hard at work on the Farmers Market, which opens on May 14. Whitney is working with the market mangers to plan a "craft" market on every First Friday.
- Continue to market the Kennett Cool Campaign. We had a business card size marketing piece printed and delivered them to the merchants. We are in dicussion with Mayor Fetick on getting the word out and manning a table at the May Art Stroll.
- Met with Larry Rayborn from WXPN about a marketing campaign for HKS on the radio station and other ideas to partner with XPN and their members.
- Whitney and I are pursuing updating the tourist brochure.
- We continue to maintain a presence on Facebook (over 1,000 fans) and MySpace.

- Working hard on Beers on Broad Street, June 5 and Meet the Brewer on June 4. We have the website up; tickets selling; marketing the event; and working on all the details. We hope all board members will volunteer either Friday or Saturday. Both of these events are being held in association with Philly Beer Week.

- Mrs. Robinsons Tea Room and gift shop opened at 108 N. Union Street. I assisted them through the ARB approval process.
- Larry and Geoff Bosley and I met with a representative from the state on the 148 building. She encouraged the borough to apply for an Anchor Building Grant similar to the grant we received for Jack McFadden. We can ask for up to $500,000, which if we receive it will remain in the borough as a revolving loan program. Like, the Downtown Reinvestment Grant the CCEDC will partner with the borough on this grant.
- The borough has requested the funds for Jack McFaddens property at 128 E. State St.
- We are looking at four vacancies in the downtown 117 W. State St., 110 E. State St, 102 E. State St. and 100 E. State St.
Promotion
- Along with KARMA we are planning the next Art Stroll April 2.

- We are up and running with Point Entertainment. They are very easy to work with and are brining new ideas on how to increase revenue.
- A benefit show at the Flash Mugs and Music was very well received by the community. This segment of our community Farmers Market fans seems to respond very well to events at the venue.
- We have been asked by the SCCCC to be the music partner for their FunFest on June 12 at the Willowdale Steeplechase grounds. Jim will be helping to identify musicians and emcee the event.
- We are partnering with Jeff Bogle outwiththekids.com on a series of kids concerts

- A lease is signed for the space at 101 W. State Street. Two women plan to open a women's boutique. Some of their merchandise will appeal to a more mature female customer.
- Mrs. Robinson's Tea Room and gift shop is open at 108 N. Union Street. It is open Thursday-Sunday.
- Jack McFadden is moving ahead with his plans for the property at 120 E. State St. Hopefully, we will see some construction activity at the site soon.
Promotion
- Along with KARMA we are planning a March Art Stroll. Coordinating these events has become much easier when working with KARMA.
- We are actively working on the Memorial Day Parade and the Farmers Market. I applied for a grant from the Mushroom Festival for the parade and have reached out to several businesses for sponsorship.

- We are working on transitioning to a new booking agent. We are hopeful that this will be very beneficial to the venue and HKS. During this reorganization we are working on job duties and responsibilities.
- We had a great weekend at the Flash. Attendance appears to be picking up!
- We are showing "The Invention of Lying" at the Kennett Flash on Thursday, March. 25 at 7:30 p.m. The attendance at movies has picked up - 18-20 people for the last two movies.
- Green Willow Folk Club has committed to using the Kennett Flash for some of their performances - they will pay expenses and we get to keep BYOB and any food profit.
- A show, "Down to Earth Mugs and Music," is planned on March 13 with local musicians that will benefit the Chester County Buy Local initiative and the Chester County Food Bank.
- I have been invited to attend West Chester's Business Attraction Committee meeting on Monday to talk about how we opened the Kennett Flash.
Organization
- The fundraising dinner committee continues to plan a spring fundraiser - "Beers on Broad Street" a restaurant and brew festival on S. Broad Street on June 5 that is now an official "Philly Beer Week" event. We have added a Friday night event at the Kennett Flash - a beer tasting event with a new brewer from Vermont.
- Meeting regularly with borough staff.

- Still looking for an appropriate tenant for the space at 101 W. State Street. Have spoken to several people interested in leasing the space but at this point there is no signed lease for the space.
- Mrs. Robinson's Tea Room and gift shop is opening soon at 108 N. Union Street.
- Jack McFadden is moving ahead with his plans for the property at 120 E. State St. Borough Council approved the loan documents on Tuesday, which was a necessary step before requesting the money from the state.

- Along with KARMA we are planning a February Winter Art Stroll in time for Valentine's Day. Posters have been distributed around town and ads have been scheduled.
- I met with the two principals of ChesterCountyDwell.com about marketing HKS events on the website. It is a website highlighting the benefits of buying local, preserving open space and other similar issues.
- I continue to attend the KARMA meetings and give a report on marketing etc.
- I applied for a $3,000 grant for the 2010 Farmers Market from the PA Department of Agriculture.

- We had two exceptionally good nights this past weekend. Friday there were 106 people for Zach DuPont and on Sunday there were 71 people for open mic. Unfortunately there were only 23 people on Saturday for Celtic music. On Monday as part of the MLK Breakfast, PlayBack for Change performed at the Kennett Flash and about 40 people attended.
- We are planning a 1 year anniversary celebration at the Kennett Flash on Friday, Jan. 29 as part of the Chris Bruni show. We will serve champagne and cake during intermission.
- We are showing "Julia & Julie" at the Kennett Flash on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
- Jim and I met with representatives from Green Willow Folk Club about them using the Kennett Flash for some of their performances.

- Jennifer and I met with JoEllen Burns-Muntz from Exelon who is going to take Michael Coyle's seat on the board.
- Several of us had lunch with KARMA representatives Tammy from Flickerwood and Marc from Great Harvest to discuss how the two groups can work together. It was a very productive, positive and cordial meeting.
- I took representatives from the Chester County Planning Commission on a tour of the downtown. The meeting was arranged through the borough as they work with the CCPC on updating their comprehensive plan.

- The tenant at 101 W. State Street backed out so we are now looking for a new tenant for the corner space.
- I am talking to a woman who is moving from NYC and is interested in opening a business in the downtown.
- A tea tasting room and gift shop is opening at 108 N. Union Street.
- Jack McFadden has finalized his plans for the property at 120 E. State St. The county economic development council is working on processing the grant.

- There are two XPN welcomes events in December - Jim Boggia on Dec. 4 and Slo Mo on Dec. 19.
- The Melton Brothers sold out their show on Nov. 6 and Beyond the Pale was almost sold out on Nov. 14. Other than those shows it has been rather slow.
- There is a community potluck on Monday, Nov. 23 being planned by the Farmers Market managers to coincide with a Blues Monday Jam.

- Working on Halloween Parade and Scarecrow contest. The parade is Wednesday, Oct. 28. The scarecrows are on our website and the public is voting for their favorite.
- The Farmers Market is winding down but had a great fermentation festival on Oct. 9.

- The Holiday rack cards have been designed and printed.
- We are working with the Longwood Rotary on the Holiday Parade on Nov. 27. They will help us fund it along with providing volunteers to help us line it up.

- We concluded a great weekend of fundraising Oct. 9 and 10. The dinner went well and the Brewfest may be the best ever. We had plenty of compliments for both events.
- We had two WCU interns in the office this month one worked on the Brewfest and the other is working on the Halloween parade.
- I am attending an Urban Centers meeting at the county offices on Friday. It is a grant application workshop.

- Showed a fellow around who is interested in opening a cigar shop. He is moving here from Chicago and still needs to secure financing.
- Ashley Austin had her grand opening Sept. 17. Both Mayor Spencer and Jennifer were on hand for the ribbon cutting.
- Café Lindo opened at 109 S. Broad St. in time for the Mushroom Festival.

- Two photographers have rented space above the V Galleria. I am talking to them about participating in Art Strolls and festivals.

- We are working hard on the beer/wine tasting dinner and the silent auction. We have been meeting regularly to plan the dinner and the set up in Genesis.
- Brewfest is Sold-Out. We have over 55 breweries attending and we have over 80 volunteers signed up.

- The Borough of Kennett Square was notified that the grant from DCED for $500,000 was awarded to renovate the former Kennett Café building. Jack McFadden owns the building and will begin renovation within the next few weeks. At this point Jack says he is going to develop a restaurant that will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. At the same bar that you get your espresso from in the morning you will be able to get your martini in the afternoon.
- A lease has been negotiated with Ashley White to rent the space in The Center for Ashley Austin, a boutique that will sell women's shoes, jewelry and accessories.
- Talking to Holly Peters about opening a café at 109 S. Broad St. The former Harrington's space. At this point she is considering opening the café herself with someone to manage it. It will serve coffee and light fare for breakfast and lunch.

- The 2009 Farmers Market opened on May 15 and it is the best ever. More vendors, more customers, more variety etc. The vendors are very pleased with weekly sales. Last week, May 22, a farmer sold 87 quarts of strawberries in a little over 1 hour. The market managers are doing a great job on getting the word out. The blog and the facebook keep receiving "hits."

The National Trust for Historic Preservation approved the proposal for the mobile workshop from the National Main Street conference in Philadelphia on Sunday, March 30. The tour will be an all-day field trip for conference attendees with the highlight being lunch and shopping in downtown Kennett. Other Route 1 stops include Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum.
Working on the last minute details for the Kennett Brewfest. So far over 1,300 tickets have been sold. We plan to sell 3,000 tickets. We have 49 brewers, 5 food vendors, 3 other non-food vendors, two bands, 55 port-a-potties, 60 pop-up tents and 60 volunteers.
Am serving as a "Community Champion" for Chester County Futures as they plan to better serve the students in their communities.
Working with the merchants on planning for the holidays. We are in the process of looking for sponsors for the holiday program. Plans include the holiday parade, carriage rides and possible holiday film series.

The downtown merchants will be participating in a nationwide-effort "Buy Local" on Nov. 17. The purpose is to encourage people to shop locally and avoid chain stores.
Farmer's Market will continue through October. Entertainment is planned for the market on Oct. 5 - the first Friday. Vendors had a great season overall even though attendance has slacked off over the last few weeks.
Took representatives from the Greater Philadelphia Tourism & Marketing Corp. on a tour of the downtown for a program they are working on to encourage tourists to visit Main Street communities.

Tina is still tabulating the results but they should give us some basic information to help us market downtown Kennett. I was on hand to conduct the survey during the art stroll and the majority of people said they liked the "small town" atmosphere of Kennett Square.

A new business The Rusty Hinge opened at 102 E. State Street. The gift shop relocated from the New Garden Shopping Center. Another new business Dichotomy will open at 100 E. State State in early June.
40,000 copies of a new brochure have been printed. Several boxes have been taken to Longwood Gardens to encourage visitors to come to Kennett Square to shop and dine. First National Bank of Chester County sponsored the printing of the brochure.

HKS' annual meeting was on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m. on the lower level of Genesis HealthCare. The guest speaker was Bill Fontana, the executive director of the Pennsylvania Downtown Center. He spoke about the challenges of downtown development but also praised Kennett Square for their efforts and said it is one of the most successful Main Street programs in the state. The following merchants were elected to the board: Marge Kuhn, Longwood Art Gallery; Kathleen Caccamo, Bedbugzz . . . ; Anne Eder, Chansonette; and Alie Bragg-Berstler, Kennett Florist.

At a holiday wrap-up meeting with the downtown merchants on Jan.10 at Newton's on State Street most agreed that the holidays were successful. Chief McCarthy estimated that 3,000 people attended the tree-lighting.

The center will be staffed 3-days a week, one day by a volunteer banker and the other two by CCEDC staff. It is slated to open in late March.

Working with Pennsylvania Downtown Center on a feasibility study for a Business Improvement District for Kennett Square. Tom will ask for volunteers from the board to sit on a committee to oversee the study. The committee will meet Sept. 8 with Malcolm Johnstone from the West Chester BID and April Ennis-Pierson from Oxford Main Street, which just completed their study. PDC will host a public meeting on the feasibility of a BID in early November.
The Pennsylvania Downtown Center has offered help to complete the application for the national Main Street award.

Working with new owners of 100 and 102 E. State Street - Todd and Eric Everts. I have arranged a meeting with Bonnie Marks from the PA Historic & Museum Commission to meet with them on the possibility of utilizing the rehab tax credits available from the state. Have given the new owners the name of someone looking to open a child-oriented business in the downtown.
Marge and I met with Marybeth DiVencenzo and Courtney O'Donnell of the Chester County Economic and Development Council on the Kennett Square Economic Services Center. We are working together to try to market the center, including business workshops that are offered through the center.
Economic Development Committee has scheduled to meet with consultant on attracting appropriate businesses and how to measure foot traffic.
Working with members of the Promotions Committee on the holiday events, as well as Halloween.
Working with Carla Willard and other merchants on S. Broad and neighboring State Street for a Block Party on Sept. 1. HKS will be selling beer and wine at the event.

Working with Pennsylvania Downtown Center on a feasibility study for a Business Improvement District for Kennett Square. A committee has been established to oversee the study. Members of the committee include Tom Swett, Jeff Yetter, Linda Tice, Jim Clymer, Sean Walker, Randy Currie, Tom Macaluso, Matt Grieco, Jim McKeon, Bob Strehlau and Marge Wolf. The committee met on Sept. 8 with Malcolm Johnstone from the West Chester BID and April Ennis-Pierson from Oxford Main Street, which just completed their study. A public meeting has been scheduled for Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
Kennett Brewfest was our best fundraising event to date. We sold 2,458 tickets and we anticipate making about $50,000. We will be meeting with Chief McCarthy to critique this year's festival and discuss how we can improve the event.

I traveled to Williamsport for the quarterly Main Street Manager's meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 3 and 4.
Plans for the Halloween events are moving along smoothly. Scarecrows will be put on the street by Monday, Oct. 23 and the parade will kick-off on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

Sponsors for the holiday program include: Borough of Kennett Square, Chester County Hospital, Fulton Bank, Riley Riper Hollin & Colagreco and Exelon. The holidays will be advertised in Community News publications in Delaware, The Kennett Paper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily Local News, The Hunt, Out & About, County Lines and 99.5 WJBR.
Jennifer and I attended a Kennett Township Supervisors meeting and brought them up to date on Main Street activities. We were received warmly and they appreciated the update.
Assisted in the filming of a commercial for the Philadelphia Inquirer. The commercial is being shot in a few Chester County communities and Kennett Square is one of them.
Met with George Reinas from Bove Jewelers about parking for his business.
Met with representatives from the Chester County Conference & Visitor's Bureau and the Greater Philadelphia Tourism & Marketing Corporation on developing a program that would include Kennett Square as one of the four outlying destinations from Philadelphia.
